Abstract

Traffic congestion in urban centers was expected to worsen due to growth in global population in future challenging urban mobility. Many believed that the solution was up in the air and that Urban Air Mobility (UAM) would be the future of transportation. The electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle was promoted as an efficient and environment friendly option due to its low emissions and other benefits. But the eVTOL vehicle had many challenges to overcome such as noise concerns, battery limitations, safety and air traffic management. Many players had started experimenting with the eVTOL vehicle, and the first company to launch a commercial eVTOL vehicle was expected to have a huge advantage in the market. The CityAirbus NextGen (NextGen) was Airbus' latest initiative to promote UAM. The France based aerospace giant's decarbonisation strategy was integrated into the design of NextGen from the very beginning. With the help of in-house expertise as well as that of partners in multiple urban environments, the prototype for NextGen was to play a key role in the creation of a more integrated and innovative mobility ecosystem to define UAM services around the world. Would NextGen be able to shape the future of urban air mobility?
