Abstract
Sundarbans, the world's largest delta was prone to multiple natural disasters due to its unique bio-geographical composition. In the densely populated region, men were forced to travel to other places for jobs due to the uncultivable nature of saline land, while women earned a meagre income of around INR50-INR60 per day through fishing. In addition, they were often endangered by tigers, crocodiles, and venomous snakes while earning a living in the disaster-prone delta. To address the social and economic challenges faced by women in the Indian Sundarbans, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal established Sundarini Naturals (Sundarini) as the organic brand of Sundarban Cooperative Milk & Livestock Producers' Union Ltd. (SCMLPUL) in 2015. As of 2023, SCMLPUL had partnered with roughly 5,000 women farmers. The main goal of this gender perspective solution was to empower marginalised women farmers in the region to produce certified organic milk and milk-based products for consumers and to establish a market linkage for the product, both domestically and internationally. Sundarini also entered the organic packaged sweets market under a franchise model but faced stiff competition from AMUL and Mother Dairy. Through its women-led organic revolution, would Sundarini overcome the business competition while promoting economic equality for women in the Sundarbans?
