Abstract
In 2022, the Government of India, inspired by UPI's success, launched the Open Network and Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform to democratise the digital e-Commerce space in India. The platform was designed to enable even minor players to participate in the e-Commerce sector through open specifications and network protocols for integrating different network participants in the ONDC ecosystem. The platform received a robust response, leading ONDC to foray into the financial service space in mid-2023. The platform aimed to work as a one-stop shop for financial services, enabling customers to access a wide range of financial services quickly and efficiently. ONDC could potentially revolutionise the financial services sector in India, but its foray into the financial space presented significant challenges. These challenges included grievance redressal, privacy and data security, policies to scale, customer experience benchmarks, and concerns related to the mis-selling and cross-selling of financial products. Given this scenario, the question remained - could ONDC revolutionise the financial services space in India?
