Abstract

In 2023, Governments across the world spent huge amounts in providing mass transport which hugely affected the GDP of nations. The annual overhead cost to society caused by transport was more than USD2.5 trillion in the EU and US. Annual spending on infrastructure, led by road and rail, was more than USD300 billion in these regions. As costs increased and urban population grew, accidents, congestion, pollution, and noise, drove the search for alternate modes of transport. With the growing advancements in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, Urban Air Mobility was seen as an affordable, rapid, and sustainable mode of intercity travel. Lilium GmbH (Lilium) was an innovator and front runner in this space which was abuzz with players ranging from legacy manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing to startups. Lilium's CEO, Daniel Wiegand (Wiegand) was set on the path to provide alternative, sustainable, affordable transportation solutions with his eVTOL Lilium Jet. Even as eVTOL faced scepticism in going mainstream and Lilium was doubted for its performance, would Wiegand be able to make the Lilium Jet the Uber of the skies?
