Abstract

This case study focuses on a fictional bank labelled Northern Sun in the following text. Like many real banks in the UK, Northern Sun has a regional focus and is framed as a challenger bank in that it is seen as challenging established banks by broadening the customer base and offering financial services to people who previously may have been excluded from certain banking services. In terms of context, Northern Sun is said to be headquartered in the north of England, founded in 2006, known for being a significant local employer as well as a supporter of sports teams and community events. In recent years, it is said that the bank has rapidly expanded after a successful humorous advertising campaign featuring a famous wrestler from the region known as 'Northern Son'. The fictional case unfolds as it is said that the entire Greater Manchester area begins to undergo an economic renaissance, and property prices rise quickly in value, boosted by the high demand for homes near Broadcast City in Salford. The case study then evolves around several scenarios that vary depending on the learners' responses. These scenarios are presented in four stages, each contingent on the learner's previous answers. As they progress to the next stage, the scenarios become more complex. Learners are prompted to contemplate how to address issues in each stage, taking into account both organisational and individual values.
