Abstract

Nintendo Company Limited (Nintendo), the Kyoto, Japan based gaming company, began as handmade cards producer and metamorphosed into gaming icon on the basis of its very unique and successful integrated hardware-software business model. Along its corporate journey, Nintendo faced both success and failures. But every time, the company reinvented itself and innovated with its product offerings. So, when Nintendo experienced downturn the first time, it bounced back with the very successful product - Ultra Hand. Next, when the company faced crisis, it reinvented itself and launched gaming consoles with in-house gaming software. Successful game titles like 'Super Mario Bros' and 'The Legend of Zelda' catapulted the status of the company and redefined the gaming space. Another decline in sales prompted the company to launch Switch and experience revival in fortunes. However, while these developments were happening, the gaming space was changing. Online/mobile gaming was getting popular and competition was getting fierce. So much so that by 2023, Nintendo's console market share shrunk to 0.05% globally. Analysts expected another innovative console launch but the company surprised everyone by announcing a live action movie based on 'The Legend of Zelda' (Zelda) game title in May 2023. It appeared that Nintendo had intended to reinvent as an entertainment powerhouse this time. The announcement was met with some scepticism. What was this scepticism? Would 'Zelda' drive the future growth for the company?
