Abstract

Dr Amit Mehta and Dr Diksha Khan are employees of Shiksha University, which is a prestigious University located in the city of Mumbai, India. Like many other academic institutions across the country, Shiksha University, followed a common practice of determining salaries based on a candidate's previous earnings. Due to this, many employees despite their exceptional skills, qualifications and contribution to the institute were drawing salary, which was far from equitable. To raise awareness of this issue, oppose the status quo, and promote change, Dr Mehta and Dr Khan formed 'Payparity' alliance. This coalition group set up unofficial gatherings and meetings where faculty members discussed their own experiences and tales to show how morale and motivation of faculty members went down by the practice of basing pay on last drawn salaries. After the alliance had many supporters and the cause gained momentum, the Payparity alliance arranged a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor and other important officials of the University. Despite initial opposition, the Payparity coalition persisted in pushing for equity and justice at Shiksha University, stressing that the institution's long-term success depended on keeping talent and maintaining a motivated faculty. After several months of negotiations, Shiksha University eventually made the decision to create a new pay structure that would lessen the impact of last drawn salaries. They would instead place more emphasis on credentials, experience, and market pricing. With the new salary structure in place, faculty members were likely to contribute their best to the goals of Shiksha University. Besides, the dedication of Shiksha University in tackling the issue of pay equity would improve its standing as a school that valued equity and diversity.
