Abstract
In 2022, the Beijing Winter Olympics went ahead as planned despite pandemic travel restrictions. However, due to the limited natural snowfall in the region, the snow arenas for the games relied entirely on artificial snow. Michael Mayr, Asian Area Sales Manager for Italian snowmaking equipment manufacturer, TechnoAlpin, played a key role in securing the million-dollar contract with the Chinese government to produce this artificial snow. TechnoAlpin's almost decade-long journey to doing business in China, and in particular winning the bid to produce snow for the Chinese government's prestige project, has been a showcase on how to successfully manage international prestige projects from an intercultural perspective. This case study provides an insight into the complexities of public tendering, in particular when bidding for major contracts with the Chinese government.
