Abstract
At the International Olympic Committee's 141st annual summit in October 2023, it was officially confirmed that India would be bidding for the 2036 Olympics. India, likely a USD10 trillion economy by 2035, desired to host the prestigious sporting and infrastructure spectacle. Organising a successful Olympics would bring tremendous pride to India's citizens and athletes and alter a generation's self-image. The hosting of the games would also boost tourism and trade in India. But hosting the Olympics would also require spending billions of dollars to create the infrastructure for the games and the tourist influx. The bid's economic viability had been questioned. In the past, the Olympics had left the host nations with losses and deficits. Valid concerns had been raised about the potential detrimental effects of holding such an event in India, where poverty was still a significant concern. Whether hosting the Olympics in 2036 would be a viable economic proposition for India?
