Abstract

This case is part of the Trade and Industry Department SME case series funded by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Trade and Industry Department SME Development Fund. Toyland Rubber Manufacturing produced high quality rubber rollers for machinery used in the paper mills, textile dyeing and printing factories. After a long period of research and market assessment, in January 2003, the owner-manager decided to open a new factory in Shanghai. His plan was interrupted by the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) crisis and he had to re-evaluate his initial plan. This case was intended to illustrate the issues pertaining to setting up a factory in China.
