Abstract
The home-grown artisanal coffee chain Third Wave Coffee (TWC) was founded in 2016 and has since then rapidly scaled in India. It became popular among coffee lovers in Bengaluru, where it boasted more cafes than Starbucks India. It also raised USD35 million in a Series C round of funding in 2023, which raised its valuation to approximately USD150 million. The rise of TWC was a concern for Starbucks India. With a weakened Cafe Coffee Day, TWC was attempting to turn the tables in the Indian coffee market with affordable premium artisanal coffee blends and a well-crafted menu. TWC was rapidly expanding in India and had 105 stores across the country in 2023. It was also intending to open 250 more locations by 2024, giving Starbucks a run for its money. Could Third Wave Coffee challenge India's leading and deep pocketed coffee chain, Starbucks?
