Abstract
The case describes a real-life business situation. Tarjimly is a non-profit organization that connects aid workers to volunteer translators across the globe to facilitate communication between aid workers and the population that they aim to serve, namely refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced people. It was founded in 2017 as a direct response to the US travel ban and has since evolved to provide translation services to aid workers in humanitarian initiatives, as well as a variety of individuals and commercial and non-profit organizations. The case illustrates the challenges that a non-profit organization may face in fulfilling its aim and realizing its vision. It showcases the humanitarian crises in the world and how a non-profit organization can provide solutions to help address these crises, while also facing multiple managerial, financial, and technological challenges. The decision-making needs to take into account the financial sustainability of the organization, while diversifying revenue sources may hinder the impact of the organization, particularly since measuring the impact of humanitarian services remains an elusive and complex task. Moreover, as a tech non-profit, Tarjimly needs to balance the opportunities that advancements in technology provide with more resource-intensive and time-consuming human verification and mediation. This decision is particularly challenging since over reliance on technology, such as Large Language Models, may threaten the financial viability of Tarjimly's paid services, or lead to life-threatening errors to the detriment of vulnerable populations.
