Abstract
The case discusses a five-year long organisational restructuring exercise undertaken by Unilever, a leading global fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company. It examines in detail the important elements of the restructuring programme named the ''Path to Growth Strategy''. The case focuses on the changes made with respect to the organisational structure, various Unilever businesses, branding strategies, operational processes and the supply chain management practices. Finally, it discusses the results of the restructuring exercise and examines the company''s future prospects in the light of its falling share price and the sluggish growth of many of its leading brands. This case is structured to enable students to: (1) gain an insight into the internal and external factors which force a large multi-product multinational company to restructure its operations; (2) understand the nature of growth strategy and its components developed for an FMCG multinational company; (3) understand the importance of proper planning and implementation of a large-scale corporate restructuring programme and its key elements; (4) analyse the overall impact of a revival strategy in improving the financial position of a company (in terms of operating margins, increased cash flows, cost savings and increased earnings per share growth). The case is targeted at MBA/PGDBA students and is intended to be part of the strategy and general management curriculum. The teaching note does not contain an analysis of the case
