Abstract

Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus (Ringling), embarked on a transformative journey after a six-year hiatus, commencing a 55-city, animal-free tour in September 2023. The circus faced a pivotal crossroads after its 146-year legacy coming to a halt in 2017, due to escalating operational costs and dwindling ticket sales exacerbated by the retirement of its iconic elephants. The circus industry, once a vibrant cultural cornerstone, confronted dwindling relevance due to evolving audience preferences, emerging entertainment alternatives, and ethical concerns linked to animal performances. Faced with the dilemma of adapting to modern sensibilities while honouring its heritage, Ringling chose to reimagine its narrative. By embracing contemporary technologies, immersive storytelling, and inventive acts, the circus aimed to recapture its former grandeur and captivate a new generation, notably Generation Z. The case study sheds light on Ringling's strategic pivot, navigating obstacles, and harnessing opportunities to metamorphose traditional circus into a multifaceted, engaging spectacle. Can Ringling skilfully blend tradition and innovation to captivate diverse modern audiences across generations?
