Abstract

Climate change was attaining an alarming level, and it was putting both the present and the future generations at risk. Consequently, 136 countries worldwide had vowed to attain net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (carbon neutrality) by 2050, and one of them was Japan. On October 26th 2020, Japan's the then Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, announced that 'the country would become carbon neutral by 2050'. Japan took various initiatives to reduce GHG emissions. The Coca-Cola System in Japan targeted to lower its GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 as against its 2015 levels, and by 30% across the whole supply chain. In December 2022, an ordinance passed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly required a portion of the newly constructed houses and buildings in Tokyo to be equipped with solar panels starting from April 2025. On July 5th 2023, Japan Airlines launched a new service called 'Any Wear, Anywhere', allowing the passengers travelling to Japan in Japan Airlines to rent all the clothes required for their trip. iKasa, an umbrella-sharing service, prevented disposable umbrellas and contributed towards lowering carbon dioxide emission by extending the longevity of umbrellas by using long-lasting glass fibre. With these initiatives, could Japan achieve its net zero goals?
