Abstract

The Suez case study has been developed as a support to discuss the links between corporate strategy and value creation, with a special emphasis on mergers and acquisitions. The case provides a detailed image of the 1997 merger between Suez and Lyonnaise des Eaux, as well as the main growth and resource allocation choices that Suez''s senior managers made between June 1997 and January 2003. Using this data, learners can analyse and study the way in which Suez''s corporate strategy has impacted its market value. An interesting connection can also be made between the 1997 Suez-Lyonnaise merger and the 1990 tie-up between Lyonnaise des Eaux-Dumez, the purpose being to discuss the consistency of the strategic choices that the company has made over the long period. In addition, data comparing Suez''s performance to its main competitors'', including Veolia (ex-Vivendi) are included.
