Abstract
This case study illustrates the opportunities and challenges of positioning sportevents as tourist attractions in isolated resource-based communities via an examination of the ultra marathon, the Canadian Death Race, in Grande Cache, Alberta. Students of sport have a natural interest in the dramatic growth of ultra-marathon running and can learn much from the success of this event. However, the case study is not intended to focus on the management of this event within the confines of sport performance. Rather, it highlights ways in which it contributes to tourism development in a remote resource-based community. The Canadian Death Raceevent organizers have demonstrated imagination, determination and a willingness to evolve and work with the broader sport and host community
