Abstract

The case challenges students to identify which one of the eight sets of financial information provided corresponds to the eight companies listed (a fashion retailer, an oil and gas company, a real estate investment trust, an airline, a chain of restaurants, a young internet consulting services company, a young pharma-biotech start-up, and a soccer club). To pair the companies with the correct financial information, they must use their accounting knowledge and inductive skills on matters such as the relative sizes of assets and liabilities, gross margins, owners, equity, operating income, research and development expenses, gains & losses on the disposal of assets, statement of cash flows, etc.
