The case presents in detail the need and rationale behind the decision to merge and the perceived synergies by both the companies from the merger. It also discusses the possible threats to the merger including cultural differences and various other issues. Finally, the case ends with a debate as to whether the merger will be successful or not in the future. The case is designed to help students develop an understanding of the following major issues: (1) study and analyse the recent trends, structure and problems facing the European civil aviation industry; (2) explore the reasons for the ongoing consolidation in the industry and its future; (3) study the rationale for the Air France and KLM merger and the perceived synergy by the managements of the two companies; (4) critically analyse the benefits and drawbacks of the merger; and (5) debate whether the merger will be successful or not in the long-term. The case is intended for MBA/PGDBM level students as part of the strategy and general management curriculum.
