Abstract

This is part of a case series. The first notes of Beethoven's 5th Symphony were coming up from the concert hall to the administration offices. Getting the organ to play was part of what visitors of Palau de la Musica Catalana could enjoy during the tour. In the fall of 2011, akin to the profound opening notes of Beethoven's Symphony No 5, the Palau found itself amid an ongoing struggle, evoking themes of uncertainty, challenge, and an unpredictable destiny. Two years ago, the former president was suspended after stealing around 30 million euros and leaving this cultural institution in shambles. Judith Pi i Riubrugent was only head of communication for less than a year, she was part of a team in charge of cleaning the mess. They had to rethink the organization and the artistic project, but also to address the reputational issue. Her job was to get the various stakeholders (the board, singers of the choir, patrons, sponsors and institutions) to agree on a visual identity that would signal a new start, and to manage sensibilities and expectations as many were trying to use the crisis to their benefit.
