An Australian manufacturer of industrial batteries enters into a joint venture with a Chinese manufacturer in order to reduce production costs. The Australian firm soon finds that the association is less desirable than had been planned. Chinese government officials appear to be corrupt and local management dishonest. The case explores some of the difficulties that may be found in joint venture operations in China when foreign firms fail to plan, and poorly control their Chinese operations.
