Abstract
This is the first of a two-case series (304-529-1 and 304-530-1). The introduction of the compact disc (CD) Audio System was one of the most successful product innovations in the decades. This series of three products describes the environment the CD system (hard and software) evolved from. The first case describes how Sony and Philips formed an alliance with the aim of developing and determining a technical standard as well as the race for developing a product for the mass market. In case (A), students are asked to identify the motives for co-operating with a close rival and discuss issues of standardisation and the dangers of waging a standards battle. If two incompatible standards had been introduced in the market, digital audio might have failed altogether. A supplement ''304-529-4'' is available to accompany the case series.
