Abstract

The case discusses the dilemma of a furniture manufacturer that he faces in striking a balance between the production of customised and standardised products. It also examines the various factors that affect the plant layout in such a condition. It also throws light on the various policy decisions that need to be considered when finalising the design of the plant layout. The case is structured to enable students to: (1) understand the impact of widening the target customer base on a company''s operations; (2) understand the physical disposition of the facilities of a plant for smooth production; (3) understand how to prioritise production activities; (4) understand the factors influencing plant layout; and (5) analyse the utilisation of labour and understand the importance of employee morale in the overall performance of an organisation. The case is intended for MBA/PGDBM level students as part of the operations management curriculum.
