Abstract

This case study addresses the issue of 'why' and 'how' to map the design and construction project process. The Britannia Walk, London, project is presented in this report as an example. Britannia Walk aimed to construct social and key worker housing, speculative offices, a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit (PMU) and car parking facilities. The project was a collaboration effort between Alfred McAlpine Special Projects (AMSP) and the University of Salford to use the process protocol (http://www.processprotocol.com) as a tool to improve project productivity and co-ordination under the Department of Environment, Trade and Regions (DETR) research programme. The process protocol is not specifically referred to in this case, but rather reports specifically on the process mapping aspects of the study. Process mapping techniques were deployed during the full conceptual design stage of the project to improve upon increased project slippage/delay. The exhibit 'Britannia Walk Production Process Map' is for demonstration purposes only.
