Abstract
Sweatshops have been an offshoot of industrial economies the world over. The use of sweatshop labour is rampant in the developing countries, where poverty and unemployment are prevalent. Especially, the sportswear industry which feeds on sweatshops in Asian countries for the production of footwear, apparel and sports equipment. As the exploitation of workers and the violation of human rights in the sweatshops is increasingly condemned, the major companies in the industry - Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and Gap - are heading for a change in their labour policies This case helps understand the problem of sweatshops from social, economic, humanitarian, ethical, and legal perspectives. It also provides scope for discussing the questions of ''ethical shopping'' and ''corporate responsibility'', through the examples of some companies in the sportswear industry. A structured assignment ''704-050-4'' is available to accompany this case.
