Abstract

This fictional negotiation case study is set in any city with a student population. The negotiation has three participants and concerns the house rules for their shared student apartment. The apartment owner has suggested that to avoid conflict, they agree in advance about how the shared apartment should be managed. The students have already discussed the issues during a Teams call and have agreed to meet face to face to complete the negotiation. There are six issues to negotiate and for each issue there are several options to be agreed upon. V Friendly, R Busy and S Clever have specific instructions in relation to the six issues and the options to be negotiated. A points system has been created to help them prioritize their choices. This negotiation is about balancing their individual substantive interests and their requirement to keep good relations with the other students after the negotiation. In some cases, the options to certain issues are identified as a no deal, which implies that this option is unacceptable to them. Fifty points is the minimum acceptable, but they should aim for a higher number of points. They should aim to maximise the value created individually and collectively.
