Abstract
This is the first of a two-case series (303-035-1 and 303-036-1). The case describes the situation at Head Tyrolia Mares in 1995 as it struggles from one financial crisis to another, under the ownership of Austria Tabakwerke, the (then) government-owned tobacco monopoly. A decision has been made to sell the company and Johan Eliasch a Swedish entrepreneur, has to decide if he wishes to buy the company and turn it around, and if so, how much to pay for it. The case includes detailed financial and market data, and key shareholder issues relating to the Austrian government, the banks and the European Commission.
