Abstract

The case provides an overview of the importance of Khadi during the freedom movement, the problems it faced in the post independence era and the reasons for its declining share in the overall production of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The case specifically deals with the strategies adopted by KVIC to improve the sales of the fabric and its efforts to popularise Khadi as fashion fabric. The case gives insights into the restructuring activities undertaken by KVIC in order to face the challenges of globalisation. KVIC's prospects to fully exploit the potential the fabric holds have also been explored. The objective of the case is to enable students to understand the strategies adopted by KVIC to reposition Khadi from a freedom fabric to a fashion fabric. Students are expected to comment on the strategies adopted by KVIC and whether these strategies would enable it to revive the declining sales of Khadi.
