Abstract
The case describes how the Reina Sofia School of Music purports to build on the power of music to fulfill its purpose at three different levels: 1) Individual level: developing musical talent to start rewarding careers; 2) Corporate level: benefiting its many stakeholders, including alumni, staff and patrons; and 3) Societal level: increasing exposure to the positive and transformational power of music. As her CEO, Julia Sánchez, explains: 'Music brings people together because it touches everyone equally, eliminating barriers of language, environment and tradition. In addition, the practice of music instills values - including dedication, shared leadership and empathy - that favor coexistence and social cohesion'. Despite its success, challenges loomed ahead such as the straining of funding sources, and AI-based disruption in musical innovation. Beyond business concerns, a thorny question nagged them - Was waiving tuition for all students, regardless of their families' income levels, viable over the long term and fair?
