Abstract

The case discusses the turnaround of Japanese automobile major Nissan Motor Co. The case first explores the reasons for the decline of Nissan. Then it provides information about the Nissan-Renault alliance and salient features of the alliance and the synergies expected through the alliance. The case focuses on the Nissan Revival Plan (NRP) and its implementation. It also explores the various problems faced by Nissan and how those problems were addressed by the NRP. The case concludes with the results of the NRP and future prospects of Nissan. The case is designed to enable students to: (1) understand how a highly reputed and successful multinational corporation can face threats of survival in a relatively short period of time in its history due to internal weaknesses; (2) highlight how the formal and closed business relationships, archaic customs and traditions and management practices that are characteristics of the business culture of a country, can come in the way of success and survival in a dynamic and global economy; (3) gain insight into how communication and involvement of employees both in formulation and implementation of a revival plan can contribute substantially to its eventual success; and (4) analyse the approach to effective development of a revival plan for a large multiplant automobile company and the components of such a plan resulting in a remarkable turnaround despite several barriers of culture, business tradition and customs and language in its extensive global operations. The case is intended for MBA/PGDBM level students as part of the strategy and general management curriculum.
