Abstract
In September 2003, Microsoft entered the antivirus (AV) industry by acquiring AV solution provider GeCAD. This move by Microsoft left many analysts speculating about the future of the AV industry, given that throughout its history Microsoft had dominated every software market it entered. This case discusses the events which prompted Microsoft to enter into the AV market, and also the likely impact of its entry on the AV industry. This case also discusses how Microsoft''s entry into the antivirus market was perceived as a threat to Linux.
