Abstract
In this case study, a number of challenges faced by the human resources director of Inchcape UK are presented: what kind of role should the human resources department play? How big should the HR department be? How much freedom should line managers have in implementing HR policy? These are challenges common to any organisation with an HR department, and the purpose of the case study is to allow students to see the solutions proposed by Inchcape, to evaluate them against models, theories and other practical examples in the field of human resource management (HRM), and to debate their own potential solutions. In the case study, the current situation within Inchcape is described, with particular focus on the role of line managers in HRM. A video is available to accompany the case ''403-007-3'' and includes interviews with the chief executive, HR director and one of the line managers, highlighting the point that there are various perspectives on the same issue in any organisation. The teaching note was written by K Truss.
