Abstract

The case examines the emergence of Employee Stock Options (ESOP''s) as an employee retention tool across the world in the late 20th century. The case discusses the concept of ESOP''s and explores its efficacy as a retention tool. The impact of the technological downturn on the global corporate world and the stock market, has been discussed in detail. The case also illustrates how ESOP''s were used in some organisations for increasing employee productivity and controlling turnover. It also discusses various other employee retention tools that can be adopted by organisations for employee retention. The case is structured to enable students to: (1) identify the importance of employee retention and various employee retention strategies that can be employed by organisations; (2) understand the concept of ESOP''s; (3) examine the reasons behind emergence of ESOP''s as a tool for employee retention; (4) examine the positive and negative aspects of ESOP''s as an employee retention tool; and (5) examine the efficacy of ESOP''s as an employee retention tool in the light of the market downturn in the early 21st century. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students, and is intended to be part of the human resources management curriculum. The teaching note does not contain an analysis of the case.
