Abstract

The case focuses on the need for performance measurement to assess the current performance of an organisation and identify steps for improving it. It examines the use of a balanced scorecard for measuring and communicating organisational performance. The case also discusses the difference between the use of the balanced scorecard for assessing the performance of corporate strategy and the performance of business unit strategy. The case also throws light on the various benefits that can accrue to a company through the use of the balanced scorecard. The case is structured to enable students to: (1) understand the need for performance measurement in an organisation; (2) understand the role of the balanced scorecard as a performance measurement tool; (3) discuss the various perspectives of the balanced scorecard; (4) analyse the benefits of the balanced scorecard for an insurance organisation; (5) discuss the various applications of the balanced scorecard in an organisation; and (6) understand the role of top management in ensuring the success of the implementation of the balanced scorecard. The case is intended for MBA/PGDBM level students as part of the management of insurance companies curriculum.
