Abstract

The case discusses the growing importance of the insurance sector in the Indian economy after its liberalisation. The case also throws light upon the importance of and the challenges posed by sales forecasting in the insurance sector. The average growth of both, life insurance as well as non-life insurance business, in comparison to Europe and other Asian countries is explained in the case. The case also touches upon the likely impact of demographic and social changes on the premiums in the life and non-life insurance businesses. Towards the end, the case examines the drivers and deterring factors for growth of insurance business in India. The case is structured to enable students to: (1) understand the projected growth for life and non-life insurance businesses in India following liberalisation of the insurance sector; (2) compare the Indian insurance market with the European and Asian insurance markets thereby helping the student to understand the potential that lies ahead for Indian insurance companies; (3) understand the factors that drive the growth of the insurance business in India; and (4) realise what factors can impede the growth of the insurance business. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students, and is intended to be part of the insurance marketing curriculum.
