Abstract

This case explains in detail the Tata Business Excellence Model (TBEM) followed by several Tata Group companies to achieve organisation-wide business excellence through continuous improvement of quality in business processes and by focusing on other areas of management including leadership, customer and market focus, strategic planning, business performance, information management, and so on. The case also provides details of how Tata Steel implemented TBEM and, as a result, reaped several benefits. The case is structured as to enable students to: (1) understand the importance of adopting a broad-based business excellence model such as TBEM, particularly by a large group comprising several corporate entities; (2) examine the various components comprising the TBEM model, the inter-relationship between them, and the integrated impact of TBEM on the organisation implementing it; (3) understand the method of implementation of TBEM in Tata Steel and its consequences and contribution to the company; (4) understand the various benefits that a company can reap by following TBEM; and (5) recognise and understand the problems associated with the implementation of performance improvement models and the inherent limitations of such approaches/models. The case is targeted at MBA/PGDBA students and is part of the operations management curriculum. The teaching note does not contain an analysis of the case.
