Abstract

This case provides an overview of the problems faced by Doordarshan (DD) due to mismanagement and competition from private channels. In the mid-1990s cable reached many Indian homes and many private channels were launched. All of a sudden DD had to contend with a host of channels whose programmes were better produced and launched. DD began losing revenue and producers to private channels. Poor quality of transmission and programme content prompted viewers to switch to private channels. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students as part of the business strategy curriculum. It is expected to give an insight into the problems faced by DD due to: (1) mismanagement of affairs within; (2) threat posed by the private channels; and (3) low content and broadcasting quality. Students are expected to gain an understanding of how external and legal environments have a profound influence on an organisation.
