Abstract

Furnel International Ltd is a major Polish manufacturer of furniture and computers, with a total employment of 6,000 people. Its huge initial success in the three years following its founding stems from the vision and entrepreneurship of its small top management team - who prior to Poland''s reform saw a way to use furniture exports to the West to earn hard currency with which to import computer components for local assembly and sale to Eastern markets. Paradoxically, Furnel''s early success was threatened by government measures aimed at economic reform. To survive, the company had to drastically reconceive its strategy and embark on a turnaround program. The (A) case is dated late 1990 and focuses heavily on company problems. There is a follow-on (B) case (393-055-1).
