Abstract

In late 1990, Poznan Pipe and Wire Works (disguised name) was among the first wave of Polish State-owned companies slated for privatization. The case describes top management''s and the newly-appointed supervisory board''s tasks as they pick their way through the evolving privatization process and try to find ways of improving the 860-employee company''s performance and prospects. One express goal is to increase the market value of shares before they are sold to potential investors. Management and the Board see multiple challenges ahead: restructuring the organisation to make it more responsive to market forces, rationalizing the product line and the production processes, revamping the compensation system and training all the employees for the new market realities.
