Abstract
Importation into England of three Arab stallions formed the basis of the world''s thoroughbred industry. Long before this, ''the Irish horse'' was represented by two broad categories: (1) ''Each'', which in the Irish language means ''steed''; and (2) ''Capall'', which describes the ''workhorse''. The Irish horse can be traced back to at least 3,000 BC. The case considers factors such as product development, ie achieving the optimal equine mix when breeding the Irish Sports Horse, the role of the Irish Draught Horse is significant. In addition to tracking developments in recent times, it describes the current status of the equine sector within the Irish economy, and provides prospective signposts to its future. A recent initiative has been the establishment of the ITM, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, and the case begs the question, what more must be done to promote Irish ''horse power'' to counter the notion that ''Ireland produces the Rolls Royce of horses, unassembled!'' A background note ''Ireland''s Attachment to the Horse'' (393-145-5) is available to accompany the case.
