Abstract

The case discusses General Electric''s (GE) e-business strategies and describes GE''s transformation from a ''brick and mortar'' company to a ''click and mortar'' company. The case explores how GE implemented its e- business strategies in various business units and how the company convinced its employees to embrace e-business. It also examines the various change management initiatives undertaken at GE and Jack Welch''s role in the proper implementation of the e-business strategy. The case also details the benefits reaped by GE after the implementation of a number of e-business projects. The case is designed to familiarise students with the strategies to be followed by a brick and mortar company when undertaking e-business projects. The case is designed to help students understand: (1) the benefits of e-business initiatives for large global companies; (2) the key elements of an e-business strategy to digitise various components of the value chain; (3) the importance of managing change when implementing an e-business strategy in a large global company with several business units; and (4) the role of top management in implementing an e-business strategy. The case is intended for MBA/PGDBM level students as part of the knowledge, information and communication systems management curriculum. The teaching note does not contain an analysis of the case.
