Abstract
The case provides insights into the tussle for control over Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TNMB). It explores a takeover dispute between the bank''s promoters (the Nadar community) and the corporate forces of the Essar Group and Sterling Computers. The case is structured to enable students to see how disputes within the Nadar community led to the Essar Group acquiring a 67% stake in the bank. Students should understand how politics, inter-community rivalry and regulatory lapses played a role in the TNMB controversy. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students as part of the economics, politics and business environment curriculum.
