Abstract

The case is intended to give a detailed insight into the disputes between Suzuki Motors Corporation (SMC) and the Government of India (GoI), joint venture partners in Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL). The case examines in depth the disputes over the expansion plan, the appointment of Bhaskarudu as the MD and the disinvestment of MUL. The case is intended to make the students think about the disputes between the GoI and SMC. It enables students to understand the dynamics of managing a joint venture and the strategic implications of a ''not-so-good'' relationship between partners. At the end of the case discussion, the students should have grasped the following issues: (1) a general understanding of the passenger car industry in India; (2) the nature of the problems faced by the Maruti-Suzuki joint venture; (3) the reasons for the disputes between the joint venture partners; and (4) the special nature of a joint venture, when the government is a partner. The case is intended for MBA/PGDBM level students as a part of the economics, politics and business environment curriculum.
