Abstract

The case explores the reasons for the increased rush of motorcycle launches in the Indian market in the late 1990s. It discusses in detail, the growth of the two-wheeler market, the demand shift from scooters to motorcycles and the sustainability of this high growth. The case is so structured as to: (1) introduce the students to the two-wheeler industry with special reference to foreign collaborations, competition and market shares; (2) scan the environmental factors that contributed to the growth of the motorcycle segment; (3) identify market segments and causes of the shift in demand between segments; (4) discuss the threats and opportunities confronting the industry and its ability to sustain growth; and (5) explore the future of the Indian players in the industry in view of impending competition from foreign players. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students and is intended to be a part of the economics, politics and business environment curriculum.
