Abstract

The case provides detailed information on various functional areas of American International Group Inc (AIG) including human resources and finance. The case discusses the company''s history since its inception, product segments including general insurance, life insurance, financial services, retirement savings and asset management and the various geographic regions in which the company operates and the revenues derived from these regions. The case also includes information regarding the company''s social responsibility initiatives and corporate governance standards. It covers the future prospects of AIG and problems faced by the company due to the lack of succession planning. Finally, the case includes a detailed note on the global insurance industry outlook. The case is structured to enable students to: (1) gain an overall understanding of the operations of a global insurance company; (2) understand the various product segments in the insurance industry; (3) understand the disadvantages of lack of succession planning; (4) understand the future strategies to be adopted by AIG in order to compete successfully in the global insurance industry; and (5) gain a general understanding of the trends in the global insurance industry. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students, and is intended to be a part of the strategy and general management curriculum. The teaching note does not contain an analysis of the case.
