Abstract

The case examines the reasons for the growing popularity of flexible work options (FWOs) in several organisations across India. It examines in detail the FWOs offered by various companies in India including Hewlett Packard India, Procter and Gamble India and ICICI. The case also discusses the concept of FWOs, its evolution, and its advantages and disadvantages for employers and employees. Finally, it also examines the future of FWOs in India and identifies some industries that encourage this option. The case is so structured as to enable students to: (1) understand the concept of FWOs; (2) identify the circumstances that led to the adoption of FWOs in India and the methods and processes involved in their implementation; (3) examine the advantages and disadvantages of FWOs for employers as well as employees; (4) identify the industries that are most conducive to the implementation of FWOs; and (5) analyse the reasons for the low popularity of FWOs and its future in India. The case is meant for MBA/PGDBA students and is a part of the human resources management/organisational behaviour curriculum.
