Cymru Electronics are a security systems company with an impressive list of clients around the world. They have grown steadily since their 1996 beginnings but have tended to ''muddle through'' rather than develop and execute a well planned business strategy. The events of 11 September 2001 saw a huge demand for their products. Cymru knew its business processes left much to be desired and employed a major consultancy firm to help them. It became clear that Cymru needed to adopt an holistic approach to procurement and supply chain management if they were to survive in the 21st century. This case can be used at postgraduate, professional and undergraduate levels to raise awareness and understanding of the procurement process, to develop an understanding of 21st century business issues and to develop an effective procurement strategy. To achieve best usage, students need to have discussed various approaches to purchasing/procurement in a variety of sectors and have understood the elements of business strategy. The case can then be used as group discussion activity as well as individual assignment/assessment.
