Abstract

The case examines the benchmarking initiatives taken by Xerox, one of the world''s leading copier companies, as part of its ''Leadership Through Quality'' programme during the early 1980s. The case discusses in detail the benchmarking concept and its implementation in various processes at Xerox. It also explores the positive impact of benchmarking practices on Xerox. The case is so structured as to enable students to: (1) understand the concept and importance of benchmarking; (2) identify the circumstances leading to the adoption of benchmarking practices at Xerox, and the sources, methods and processes involved in its implementation; (3) examine the benchmarking model developed by Xerox; (4) study the approach, methodology and process involved in the implementation of benchmarking in a manufacturing company; (5) understand the guidelines for the successful implementation of benchmarking, particularly in a large manufacturing organisation; (6) explore the benefits derived by Xerox through the use of benchmarking; and (7) examine the contribution of benchmarking practices to Xerox''s survival. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students and is intended to be a part of the production and operations management curriculum. There is a Spanish translation available ''E602-051-1''.
