Abstract
This is the first of a four-case series (023-C95A-P, 023-C97B-P, 023-C97C-U and 023-C97D-P). The case series is positioned as the first high potential start-up in a new ventures course. It is an opportunity for students to compare and contrast this with the earlier cases: 'Scott Tompkins' (803-030-1), 'Jack Sprat's Restaurant' (802-037-1), 'Streamline Business Systems' (802-077-1), and 'Andrew Zenoff' (BAB090). When they finish this case they ought to have a better understanding of what constitutes a high potential company that attracts professional venture capital. But it's not a 'perfect' high potential, so it gives students an opportunity to spot its deficiencies. The case series that should immediately follow this case in a course is the Jon Hirschtick 'SolidWorks' case series (803-006-1 and 030-C95B-P), which is an almost 'perfect' high potential start-up. As a financing case, Neverfail Computing works well as a linking case between 4F (founders, family, friends, and foolhardy) funding and formal venture capital. Neverfail Computing has a proven team, with a proven lead entrepreneur, in an exciting market niche, in a rapidly growing technology, RAID hot-pluggable, fault-tolerant, hard drive arrays using the SCSI (small computer system interface). It is the kind of high potential venture that attracts venture capitalists. A video '023-V96A-P' is available to accompany this case.
