Abstract

The case discusses the problems faced by eBay in its hardware, software and storage systems, which led to frequent outages. It also discusses the measures taken by the company to strengthen its infrastructure and the benefits reaped in the process. The case is designed to help students analyse the systems architecture of an auction website and the problems faced while operational. Students should essentially develop a general understanding of the following: (1) the operational aspects of an auction website; (2) the systems architecture of an auction website; (3) the problems faced in the systems architecture by an auction website and how to overcome them; and (4) the benefits reaped by the company after the improvement of its system architecture.
